Alisson Becker has been Liverpool’s undisputed no. 1 since joining in 2018, yet the impending signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili could soon change that.

Liverpool are believed to be close to signing Mamardashvili from Valencia, with the Georgia international expected to be loaned out for the season in order to continue his development as one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in Europe.

With Mamardashvili clearly viewed as a long-term replacement for Alisson, the 23-year-old being signed now and then shipped out for the year could be a smart decision from the Reds given how few games the young shot-stopper would play as the Brazilian’s deputy.

And Alisson has now shared his verdict on Liverpool signing Mamardashvili this summer.

Alisson pleased with Liverpool’s plan to sign Mamardashvili

Speaking to the Times, Alisson shared his excitement over the signing of Mamardashvili, with the Liverpool keeper pleased to see the Reds look ahead into the future and have a replacement lined up for when he feels like his time at Anfield is up.

Alisson said when asked about Mamardashvili’s arrival: “The club needs to prepare for the future. We are not going to last forever here, I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club and I want to give to the club as much as I can.

“They will do it for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves for the future. I think it was a good idea. I knew about that [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think.

“They are doing the right thing but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, [so] I will stay.”

Alisson could still be Liverpool’s no. 1 for the next few years

Liverpool have made a good call in signing a top young keeper in Mamardashvili as part of their long-term strategy to move on from the likes of Alisson under Arne Slot.

However, there’s a real chance that the former AS Roma star could be Liverpool’s starting goalkeeper for the next few years, with the 32-year-old shot-stopper still at the top of his game.

With goalkeepers famously peaking longer than any other players in football, Mamardashvili might still have to wait before he’s given the chance to take over at Anfield, with Alisson one of the best in the world.
