Liverpool enjoyed a fruitful Premier League debut under Arne Slot on Saturday, recording a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town.

The game came amidst some transfer unrest for the Reds, who are still yet to make a new signing during the summer transfer window.

But if Arne Slot continues to guide Liverpool to convincing wins, then the frustration over a lack of business will soon die down.

For a while on Saturday it had looked as though the opposite might happen. A sluggish first-half from the Reds could have seen Ipswich take the lead. Slot was not happy and made a change at the break.

From then on, Liverpool were much better. The Reds even showed some signs of a new way of playing under the Dutch head coach. With that in mind, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai’s post-match comments have drawn some attention.

Dominik Szoboszlai makes ‘really interesting’ comment

Szoboszlai is set for a big role in Liverpool’s midfield this season. Despite a disappointing end to 2023/24 and a poor Euros, the 23-year-old has so much to offer.

Although he played well against Ipswich, Szoboszlai has been told to step up during this campaign and justify the hype surrounding him.

We have already heard from players such as Curtis Jones about how Slot’s system could favour the midfielders in the Liverpool squad.

Few will stand to benefit from that more than Szoboszlai. Asked to do a slightly unfamiliar job as a water carrier under Jurgen Klopp, he looks to have more freedom with the new boss.

The Hungarian spoke about his role following the game, and his comments caught the attention of former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson.

“It was funny, Dominik Szoboszlai was talking about the way they played in midfield,” Thompson told TalkSPORT.

“One was a six one, one was an eight and one was a ten. They come up with all these numbers but I thought it was a really interesting concept of them playing in different lines.

That was quite sort of new to me and I think it caused Ipswich problems, especially in the second-half,” the Liverpool legend added.

What did Dominik Szoboszlai actually say?

Szoboszlai’s comments were made immediately after the game while speaking to LFCTV.

“We play a little bit differently. [Under Klopp] we played with one six and two eights with one of the eights dropping as a six,” said the midfielder.

“Now we play one eight, one six and one ten and I have the role of the number 10. But sometimes I can drop, sometimes I can stay [higher].

“I think I have more offensive work with the ball, but without the ball I still have to do my stuff! So, similar to last season.”

Szoboszlai made a pretty good impression in his new role at Portman Road, in the second-half especially. As he gets more and more used to what’s expected of him, we’re sure we’ll see even more quality from him.
