Micah Richards has spotted a problem for Arne Slot and Liverpool during opening game vs Ipswich Town

Liverpool started the new Premier League season with a win against Ipswich Town, with the Reds taking to Portman Road without a single new signing.

The Anfield side are the only club in the English top-flight to have not brought in a new player, with Liverpool’s only major piece of transfer business coming in the form of Fabio Carvalho’s permanent move to Brentford.

With Liverpool missing out on Martin Zubimendi, time is running out for the Reds to secure some new signings, something Arne Slot might come under fire for if the Merseyside giants end the summer without a single recruit.

And Micah Richards has shared what Liverpool need to do after their 2-0 win against Ipswich.

Liverpool told to sign new holding midfielder after Ipswich win

Speaking on the Rest is Football, the former Manchester City defender noted that Liverpool could do with signing a holding midfielder, with Richards saying that Ipswich found it too easy to break through the Reds’ centre.

Although Ryan Gravenberch won praise from Slot for his performance in the holding midfield position, it’s clear that the Dutch international is not a long-term solution for the role in this Liverpool squad.

And for Richards, there was enough evidence in Liverpool’s win against Ipswich to suggest that a new holding midfielder would be a good signing for the Reds this summer, with time running out to do just that.

Richards said when asked what Liverpool need: “I think in terms of going forward, I still think they need a holding midfielder. Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are all very good players, but I feel at times Ipswich got in a little too easy. Against the top teams maybe they would have been punished.”

Liverpool should have addressed midfield issue way earlier this summer

It goes without saying that Liverpool might have made a mistake this summer in waiting as long as they did to move for a target in Zubimendi, with the Reds paying the price for their incompetence in the market.

And with so little time remaining in the transfer window, there’s a real chance that the Anfield side could end the summer with no new signings, a prospect that could wipe out a lot of support Slot has built up since being appointed.

Indeed, there’s still some days left before the market is closed until January, and for Liverpool, they need to make every day matter if they’re to bring in the signings needed to challenge for the Premier League this season.
