Liverpool are yet to make a summer signing, yet the Reds have already come close to one deal in the form of Martin Zubimendi.

The Anfield side identified the Spanish international as their top midfield target after Euro 2024, with Liverpool looking likely to sign Zubimendi having enjoyed international success this summer after a fantastic season with Sociedad.

However, Zubimendi surprisingly rejected a move to Liverpool, with the 25-year-old opting to remain with Sociedad this summer despite being handed the opportunity to move to the Premier League with one of the biggest clubs in the world.

And Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil has now shared his theory on why Zubimendi rejected Liverpool.

Manager says Zubimendi wanted to stay with Sociedad over joining Liverpool

Speaking to Diario Vasco, Alguacil suggested that Zubimendi turned down the prospect of moving to Liverpool due to his love for his boyhood club, with the midfielder coming through Sociedad’s academy to establish himself as a first-team star.

Alguacil said when asked about Zubimendi rejecting the Reds to stay at Sociedad: “He has rejected an offer. There is no doubt that Liverpool are great and the fact that he has said no, putting in what they put in, is a reason to be proud.

“It means that things are being done well at the club and even if such powerful clubs come, Martin says no, I’m happy, but there’s still time until the 30th. Now it was Liverpool, but tomorrow it could be another great one, because the players have a level.

“Although, for me, the biggest is Real Sociedad. I imagine he must have thought that and that is why he decided to stay.”

Liverpool will wish they moved sooner for Zubimendi

Liverpool’s transfer strategy this summer has been an unusual one, to say the least, with the Premier League season now here with the Reds yet to make a single move.

And in the pursuit for Zubimendi, the Anfield side will now wish they moved sooner for the Spanish international, with Liverpool simply striking way too late in their chase for the 25-year-old midfielder.

As a no. 6 signing, Zubimendi would have been a dream addition for the Reds, and Liverpool can only have themselves to blame over why the Sociedad star opted to remain in the Basque country.
