Georgian press share what’s really going on with Liverpool and Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool are increasingly in danger of having one of their most disappointing transfer windows in a long time.

The Reds have so far failed to bring a single player through the door at Anfield. That makes them the only team in Europe’s top five leagues yet to make a signing.

As bad as that is, things had seemed to be looking up heading into the weekend. A deal to make Martin Zubimendi the first addition of the Arne Slot era appeared possible.

However, after Zubimendi closed the door on the move, Liverpool have decided not to target an alternative. The outlook immediately turned bleak.

Nevertheless, there is still time for the Reds to add to their first-team squad. And reports have suggested that Liverpool are in talks to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.

What’s going on with Liverpool and Giorgi Mamardashvili?

It is a slight surprise to hear that Liverpool are pushing to sign Mamardashvili before sending him out on-loan.

The Reds are currently well-stocked for goalkeepers and any move for the Georgian would seem like a nod towards a post-Alisson Becker future.

So far though, it has been interesting to note that several different journalists have given contrasting updates on the situation regarding Liverpool and Mamardashvili.

Fabrizio Romano has been in no doubt that the Reds are actively in discussions over the 23-year-old.

Meanwhile The Athletic’s James Pearce wrote on Tuesday that while Liverpool are ‘monitoring’ Mamardashvili, they don’t currently plan on signing a goalie this summer.

Finally, a Monday evening update from Paul Joyce in The Times also echoed that ‘monitoring’ is the Reds’ stance right now.

Often in transfer sagas, slightly more insight can come from a player’s homeland. In this case, Georgian journalist Lasha Kokiashvili has given his take on proceedings.

“It is true that Mamardashvili really wants to play in the Premier League one day and he likes the option of Liverpool very much — the parties continue to talks,” Kokiashvili writes on X.

Liverpool need more than Mamardashvili

Liverpool’s interest in Mamardashvili will not do much to abate a supporter base who are currently angry at their team’s lack of investment.

As good as the Georgia international looks like he may be, the Reds simply don’t need him right now.

In short, if Caoimhin Kelleher stays, then the Liverpool squad is not helped at all by having Mamardashvili in it. Even if Kelleher leaves, he’s arguably a superior goalkeeper anyway.

Instead, the Reds simply have to make some moves to strengthen what Slot has to work with.

We know that they won’t make signings just for the sake of it, but as things stand Liverpool are heading into the season weaker than when they ended the last campaign. That won’t do.
