Martin Zubimendi is likely to become Liverpool’s first signing this summer, with the Reds closing in on the Spanish midfielder.
Liverpool have alerted Real Sociedad of their intention to sign Zubimendi, with the 25-year-old talent weighing up whether to leave his boyhood club as the Reds prepare to trigger the Basque star’s £51m release clause.
With Liverpool still in need of a long-term no. 6 to replace Fabinho, Zubimendi could be a dream signing for the Reds to fill this position for many years to come if an agreement can be reached with the player.
Yet pundit Tony Cascarino has made an interesting comparison to Zubimendi with former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho.

Liverpool told Zubimendi is ‘not a Coutinho’ when it comes to magic moments
Speaking on TalkSport, the pundit made the claim that Zubimendi won’t provide magic moments for Liverpool like Coutinho used to do for the Reds, with the two players as different as they come.
Zubimendi has established himself as an outstanding no. 6 who will control the tempo of the game and orchestrate everything around him, whilst Coutinho during his Liverpool years was known as an electric attacking midfielder who could produce magic out of nothing.
Cascarino said on Zubimendi joining Liverpool this summer and what the midfielder will provide for the Reds: “He is a quality footballer. He will have no problem receiving balls in tight areas because he will wriggle his way out of it. He is a team player mainly.
“I wouldn’t say he is a brilliant individual because technically he’s great but he’s not a Coutinho where he’s going to just light up by his brilliant movement and then often could fire one in the top corner. I don’t see that. I see a more team ethic player that will fit into Liverpool’s system.”

Zubimendi won’t be signed to help Liverpool’s attack
Liverpool’s forward options are as good as any team in the Premier League’s, with Arne Slot’s problems in the team coming from the midfield and defence, where depth is needed.
In Zubimendi, Liverpool will be signing a player who can help out with the midfield and act as a true successor to Fabinho in the no. 6 role, a position Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister shared last season.
Whilst progressive passing and breaking the lines will be part of Zubimendi’s game, the Basque star will be tasked with keeping everything ticking in the midfield, something Liverpool desperately need going into the new campaign.
