Things never feel to be straightforward when it comes to Liverpool and signing defensive midfielders.
The Reds have been on the lookout for a new holding player since it became clear that Fabinho was a little on the wane in 2022.
That summer, Liverpool tried to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, only to see the Frenchman opt to join Real Madrid instead.
Then, one year later, the Reds thought they had persuaded Moises Caicedo to come to Anfield after having a massive bid accepted by Brighton. But as it turned out, Caicedo only wanted Chelsea.
So, after two years of missed targets, enter the Martin Zubimendi saga of 2024. As Liverpool push to convince Zubimendi to leave his boyhood club, things are more up in the air than ever.

Sky Sports journalist drops Martin Zubimendi hint
Maybe Liverpool are paying for the way they signed Fabinho with the most minimal amount of fuss back in 2018.
The Reds presented the Brazilian as a new signing the day after losing the Champions League final that year. It was the stealthiest transfer in modern Liverpool history.
Since then, it has been nothing but trouble where defensive midfielders are concerned. And, so far, Zubimendi has unfortunately proven no different.
With the 25-year-old currently away with Real Sociedad for a pre-season friendly in Berlin, Zubimendi’s advisors are urging him to join Liverpool.

But La Real are trying whatever they can to keep the Euro 2024 winner at their club. It’s clear that Zubimendi has a big decision to make.
With the news that the Reds were trying to sign him breaking on Wednesday, Liverpool supporters would have hoped for a decision by now.
According to an update from journalist Florian Plettenberg on Friday morning, Zubimendi is very keen to join the Reds.
Adding to that update around 12pm the same day, Plettenberg sent an intriguing hint. Retweeting his original post along with a tick emoji and a Spanish flag, it looks like potentially positive news for Liverpool.
What could Plettenberg’s update mean?
It seems very likely that we’re now on the verge of getting some concrete news about what decision Zubimendi has made.
In terms of Plettenberg’s update itself, it looks likely to be an acknowledgement that things are progressing in Liverpool’s favour.
However, given that the player is deciding between England and Spain, some may read the inclusion of the Spanish flag as being a suggestion that Zubimendi has opted to stay at home.
From our point of view, we like to be positive and it reads to us that things are pushing ahead for Liverpool.
Let’s hold on and see if anything more concrete comes out throughout the rest of the day.
