Don Hutchison urges Liverpool to sign £33m attacker who Thierry Henry thinks is top class

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has been busy assessing what he needs to add in the transfer market.

Slot has inherited a squad in a very good place after a decent season under Jurgen Klopp’s stewardship.

But despite Liverpool being there or thereabouts for the title in 2023/24, it does feel like they could do with a little more added to the first-team squad.

Initially, it appears that Slot has identified the midfield as the main area in need of upgrading. Liverpool are targeting Martin Zubimendi as their first signing of the summer.

However, it’s also clear that the Reds could be more clinical up-front, too. And with that in mind, former player Don Hutchison thinks he’s found the solution.

Liverpool told to make Ollie Watkins signing

If Liverpool are to bring in more than one player this summer then it has to happen quickly. The window closes in three weeks.

By the sounds of things, the Reds do have big plans. There were claims last week that Slot is looking to sign up to four players.

Part of that new quartet was the possibility of Liverpool bringing in two new forwards.

Although it has been suggested that the Reds would be targeting wide attackers such as Anthony Gordon, Hutchison has claimed that they need someone who’ll operate more in the penalty box.

In pre-season Slot has shown that he’s likely to play with one central striker, two wide players and an advanced midfielder feeding off them.

And speaking to ESPN FC, Hutchison, who played 60 times for Liverpool between 1990 and 1994, says Ollie Watkins could be perfect as the lone man up top.

“If I am Liverpool, I probably would sign Ollie Watkins,” says the pundit.

“Because I think what they need is someone who plays within the 18-yard box and is guaranteed to score goals.”

Could Liverpool sign Ollie Watkins?

After shining for England at Euro 2024, Watkins’ stock has never been higher. The 28-year-old had a stunning season with Aston Villa, too, and is now considered one of the best strikers in the country.

Watkins has impressed the likes of Thierry Henry with his form for Villa.

With Unai Emery’s side competing in the Champions League this season, there’s little chance of the Reds signing Watkins. And despite Hutchison’s viewpoint, we’re absolutely fine with that.

It has actually been claimed that Liverpool have their very own Ollie Watkins coming through in Jayden Danns. The Reds would be better off nurturing his talents rather than spending a bomb on the man himself.

Besides, we’re still backing Darwin Nunez to go out and be the penalty box striker that Liverpool need under Slot, anyway.
