Liverpool lost several key players at the end of the season as their contracts at Anfield expired, including Joel Matip.

Matip is wanted by Fulham and Everton, having exited Liverpool earlier this summer after an eight-season spell at the club.

Thiago Alcantara and Adrian also left the Reds after their contracts expired, leaving big gaps in Arne Slot’s squad.

Xabi Alonso wants Matip at Bayer Leverkusen, with the centre-back now needing to make a decision on his next club.

Adrian has already chosen Real Betis, while Thiago has retired from football to become a coach at former club Barcelona.

Having just turned 33, Matip still has plenty to give on the pitch, with his ability and experience certain to improve a long list of clubs.

But according to Kicker, the centre-back has rejected a move to Everton or Fulham, with Matip not wanting to stay in the Premier League.

Liverpool fans will have mixed memories of Joel Matip, Adrian and Thiago

Matip earned the respect of Liverpool supporters for his efforts on the pitch during his lengthy stay at the club.

Injuries certainly hampered his progress, but the defender certainly gave his all when required and when finally fit.

Jurgen Klopp was a big fan of the centre-back, but this summer was always going to be one of transition, with Matip never looking like staying.

He could have helped Slot’s transition from Feyenoord, but ultimately the manager will want fresh blood available.

Adrian and Thiago were in similar positions, with the former not needed by Slot due to his third-choice goalkeeper status, and the latter simply having too many injury issues.
