Whether Arsenal could come back and rival Liverpool to sign Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool’s top midfield transfer target of the summer window was finally revealed on Wednesday.

The Reds had been looking into bringing in a new defensive-minded midfielder who would be better suited to Arne Slot’s system.

The new head coach has put Wataru Endo up for sale at Liverpool after deciding that the Japan captain is not quite what he’s looking for.

With Liverpool looking to the window instead, Martin Zubimendi has been installed as the Reds top target between now and the end of August.

But Zubimendi has been a wanted man before. Liverpool are seemingly pushing hard, but it’s still in the balance whether he ends up at Anfield.

Will Arsenal come back for Martin Zubimendi?

Zubimendi is an excellent midfielder. The 25-year-old brings a touch of class to proceedings, as he expertly showed during the Euro 2024 final with Spain.

As a result, we think Zubimendi is the perfect midfielder for Liverpool in their current guise.

Nevertheless, the Reds are clearly not the only team to think that the Real Sociedad man could slot into their team seamlessly.

Arsenal have been after Zubimendi in the past but were turned down by the player. His loyalty towards Sociedad and his home town of San Sebastian is one of the reasons Liverpool may find it hard to sign Zubimendi.

But with Liverpool’s interest now very much in the public domain, journalist David Lynch has explained whether the Gunners could now try again.

“It’s worth mentioning that now this news is out there, there’s always a possibility that other clubs could come in and compete for his signature,” Lynch told his YouTube channel.

“Whether that’s Arsenal maybe reigniting their interest, although it seems that they’ve got other midfield targets.

“Manchester United have long been touted as a potential destination. If they put their money on the table that could be an issue for Liverpool.

Liverpool need to move quickly on Zubimendi

As has been noted, Zubimendi is not minded to give up what he has at his boyhood club for just anything.

The 25-year-old has already knocked back some of the world’s biggest clubs to stay in San Sebastian. And why would he not, it’s a beautiful city.

But if Liverpool have gone public – by way of local journalists – with this news, then it means that they are at least some way encouraged.

If Zubimendi is considering taking the plunge and moving to Merseyside, then Liverpool have to push ahead and wrap things up as quickly as they can.

A green light from this player in particular could lead to a barrage of other clubs trying their hand, too. They have to move quickly here, but we’re backing them to get it done.
