Liverpool are expecting ‘incredible’ player to leave once they get back from the USA

Liverpool are enjoying the final throes of their time in the USA this pre-season.

The Reds crossed the Atlantic for the first time in five years this summer, taking in three games in three different cities.

With the final instalment of that trio set to take place on Sunday morning against Manchester United, Liverpool will then fly back to England at the start of next week.

From there, it will be full steam ahead on the Reds’ final preparations for the new Premier League season. Arne Slot will welcome back the final members of his Liverpool squad as the campaign opener looms into view.

As well as full focus being on the training pitch, though, Liverpool are set to be active in the transfer market, too.

Liverpool expecting Nat Phillips sale

Liverpool have so far been exceptionally quiet in terms of incomings and outgoings this summer.

In fact, the Reds are still the only Premier League club yet to make a signing. That has been a concern for some at Anfield.

Nevertheless, as the transfer deadline starts to stealthily creep into view, it appears that Liverpool’s landing back on Merseyside will be the trigger for lots of action.

Joe Gomez’s Liverpool future is in doubt following a collapsed negotiation with Newcastle earlier in the summer.

But according to The Athletic, Gomez is not the only Reds defender who could end up being sold before August the 30th.

They claim that it is now ‘expected’ that Nat Phillips will move on once Liverpool are back on home soil.

Phillips has featured briefly in both of the Reds’ pre-season matches in the US, but it’s claimed that the feeling is that the 27-year-old will go.

Sepp van den Berg could also reportedly be sold, although the 22-year-old is said to have given Slot ‘food for thought’ with his good performances on tour.

End of the road for Nat Phillips

It is high time that Liverpool cut Phillips loose and allowed him to get on with his own career. That he’s now 27 and still with the Reds is quite unbelievable.

The No.47 is a good defender, but has never been of the required standard to be a real option for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp called Phillips ‘incredible‘ back in 2022, but he has never truly looked capable of being a long-term option.

Nevertheless, although he looks primed to leave, we have been here before and the centre-back has ended up staying put.

Liverpool turned down a bid for Phillips from Turkish side Trabzonspor earlier in the off-season. They need to be careful that they don’t price him out of a move once again.

This time does feel a little different, though. If we see Phillips during Sunday’s friendly with Man United, it could his last outing in a Liverpool shirt.
