Tottenham looking into signing £19m former Liverpool player who Jurgen Klopp was ‘so excited’ about

It’s always interesting to see where former Liverpool players end up once they’ve called it a day at Anfield.

Take this summer, for example. A number of Liverpool stars of the past have been in the news having moved to different clubs.

For Philippe Coutinho, there was a stark reminder for how far his star has fallen. Coutinho joined boyhood club Vasco da Gama on-loan.

Alberto Moreno and Pepe Reina moved to Como to play under former Spain national team colleague Cesc Fabregas, while Nuri Sahin took up a job in management with Borussia Dortmund.

For the most part, things don’t tend to go well in a post-Anfield world for many players. But one who excited Klopp himself looks like he could now get himself a good move to Tottenham.

Tottenham exploring Dominic Solanke deal

It is the nature of football that not every signing made by a club will end up working out. This is obviously the same for Liverpool.

Nevertheless, there is often lingering regret when a player does not quite fulfil his potential with the Reds only to go on and do so further down the line.

Liverpool had high hopes for Dominic Solanke when he joined on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2017.

Klopp recently said he was ‘so excited’ when Solanke arrived, but the striker managed just one goal in 27 appearances before leaving for Bournemouth.

The £19m was certainly too good to turn down for a player who didn’t look like working out anytime soon. But Solanke has more than justified his fee for Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old has scored 77 goals in 216 games at Dean Court including 19 in the Premier League last season. And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, this has alerted Tottenham.

“Tottenham explore move for Dominic Solanke, he’s among targets for Spurs,” Romano wrote on X. “Difficult deal as he’s key player for AFCB, no formal bid to Bournemouth so far.

“Spurs exploring options to bring in new striker and potentially new winger, based on opportunities.”

Do Liverpool have a sell-on clause for Dominic Solanke?

It’s nice to see that Solanke has blossomed into the Premier League striker that Liverpool initially believed he could have been for them.

After losing him on a free seven years ago, there were even claims that Chelsea were pushing to bring Solanke back earlier this summer.

For Liverpool, there is certainly no chance that they will get involved in anything like that. Solanke’s days as a Red are over.

Instead, Liverpool stand to profit from any deal that happens with the forward. The Reds inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause into the deal with Bournemouth.

Given that Solanke has a release clause of £65m, Spurs pushing forward with this one would be good news at Anfield.
