World Cup winner Mats Hummels sends message to Liverpool player after being spotted training in his shirt

As Liverpool supporters clamour for new signings, they’ll jump on anything they can that may signal transfer activity.

The Reds are yet to make any additions so far this summer despite the need to strengthen in one or two areas.

As August lays on the horizon, Liverpool fans have been ‘guaranteed’ that their club will be active in what remains of the transfer window.

One of the places the Reds seem most likely to strengthen in is at centre-back. Arne Slot looks a little light in the middle of his defence.

And as the Liverpool recruitment team search for the right solution, perhaps they’ll be interested in the recent social media activity of free agent Mats Hummels.

Mats Hummels sends Virgil van Dijk message

It’s fascinating that with the new season just a couple of weeks away, Hummels is still yet to find himself a new club.

The 35-year-old left Borussia Dortmund having lost a second Champions League final for them in May. Hummels certainly won’t have been short of offers and in our opinion, Liverpool should be in for Hummels, too.

Although he would obviously not come in as a long-term option for the Reds, the German could be a brilliant stop-gap if they aren’t quite able to bring in a younger, more desired option.

At this stage, we’d be amazed if that were to transpire. Nevertheless, Hummels has been spotted training in a Liverpool shirt as he ponders his next move.

Taking to Instagram late on Tuesday night, the former Bayern Munich centre-back shared a post of himself proudly sporting a shirt bearing the name of Reds captain Virgil van Dijk.

Playing on what looks to be a five-a-side pitch, Hummels shared a little joke while tagging in Van Dijk.

“One of the best CB’s ever…wearing a Virgil van Dijk jersey,” jokes the defender. “Sorry for that gag. You are a beast.”

A 2018/19 New Balance third shirt with Champions League patch visible, the top appears to have been swapped with Virgil after Liverpool beat Bayern on the way to winning the trophy that season.

Why Liverpool should sign Mats Hummels

From what we know of FSG and the way they move in the transfer market, Hummels would be an absolute no-no for them. However, we really wish that would not be the case.

Yes, his age is clearly against him, but that could also be a real benefit to Liverpool.

Hummels is not in the territory of a slightly ageing player looking for his last big contract in the mould of someone like Adrien Rabiot.

Instead, the veteran is probably more just seeking somewhere to see out his playing days. If at the top, all the better.

Alongside Van Dijk, Hummels could still form a rock solid rotational partnership for Liverpool, as well as being an older head for the younger players coming through.

Maybe we’re just being nostalgic, but we’d love to see these two line up together for the Reds.
