Virgil van Dijk set to receive some big offers to tempt him into leaving Liverpool this summer

Liverpool have so far managed to navigate the transfer window without losing any of their key players.

There had perhaps been a worry for supporters that Jurgen Klopp’s departure could cause some to re-evaluate their futures with the Reds.

But more than two months after the end of the season at Anfield, and the Reds have not let a single player leave who is still under contract.

They did lose Adrian against their will, that’s true. Liverpool offered a contract to Adrian but the veteran goalkeeper rejected it in order to re-sign for boyhood club Real Betis. In reality, though, Adrian is replaceable in the Liverpool squad.

However, with the window still open for another five weeks or so, the work is not yet complete for Liverpool. There could still be a battle looming to keep one of Arne Slot’s biggest stars.

Virgil van Dijk set for offers

Although they have so far managed to keep all of their players around, the more difficult days certainly lie in wait for Slot, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards.

At the moment, the most uncertainty surrounds Liverpool’s captain and vice-captain: Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Both players have just one year left on their contracts at Anfield and the pair are both still incredibly important to the club.

It bodes well that there has been no movement in terms of a transfer away for either, but the two defenders have also been in Euro 2024 action for most of the summer so far. Things have not ramped up yet.

Real Madrid are lurking for Alexander-Arnold and the sooner he is tied to a new contract the better.

As for Van Dijk, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has told Dutch outlet Soccer News that while he expects the centre-back to stay put this summer, there is about to be a push from Saudi Arabia to change that.

“I don’t think Van Dijk will leave this summer,” says the transfer expert. “In this period of change after the Jurgen Klopp era, I think Virgil can be so important to transfer Liverpool’s ideas to the new coach, so I don’t think they will let him go this summer.

“At the end of this [transfer] season, we’ll see if he’ll leave or not,” Di Marzio adds. “I don’t think he’ll play for any other Premier League team.

“But it is very likely that there will be offers from Saudi Arabia, because he is a sought-after player there. They will come, I don’t know when, with peppery proposals for him and we’ll see if he wants to accept this or stay in Europe, to fight for titles and the Champions League.”

Will Virgil van Dijk sign a new contract?

It should be no surprise to hear that the Saudis are monitoring Van Dijk’s situation. There have been reports already that the Liverpool’s £75m man has already taken a meeting with Al Nassr, for example.

However, the predominant feeling has always been that Virgil would rather stay at Liverpool.

Given that he has just one year left on his deal, it’s perhaps to be expected that Van Dijk is scouting out what could come next.

But if Liverpool get a good contract offer down for him, then the Dutchman could yet finish his career at Anfield.

In our opinion, we think Liverpool will be keen to get Van Dijk tied down. He is still at the top of his game and despite being 33 could play for years yet. He is a special, special player and the Reds should make an exception. Gladly, we think they will.
