Gabriel Agbonlahor says Liverpool have £50m player who is a nightmare for defenders to stop

Liverpool supporters are still hoping for new arrivals in the transfer market before the end of August.

The Reds have so far refrained from doing any business at all in the off-season and are due to head into the campaign with more or less the same group.

However, those fans clamouring for some money to be spent should remember that there is a reason Liverpool are keeping things to a minimum in the market.

The Liverpool squad is currently exceptionally deep and has quality running throughout. Arne Slot has taken over a brilliant group of players.

Rarely one to hold his tongue, former England strike Gabriel Agbonlahor has given supporters a timely reminder that there are some top players already at Anfield.

One of the areas that Liverpool have been most linked to making a new signing in is in the forward line.

The Reds do currently have a number of really good options in attack, but that has not stopped links to Takefusa Kubo, for example.

Part of the reason why Liverpool may have been looking for another forward this summer is because of potential outgoings.

There is still no guarantee that Mohamed Salah will be at the club come September 1st, while Darwin Nunez’s future has previously been up for debate, too.

But while Salah and Nunez have always looked more likely to stay than leave, much more significant doubt has been lingering over Luis Diaz.

Diaz has been linked with Barcelona amid question marks over his output last season. But speaking on TalkSPORT (23/07/2024 5.15 pm), Agbonlahor has made a good case for Liverpool to keep the £50m man.

“I like Diaz,” says the pundit. “When he is on it, he is a problem. He is one that can finish better. When he is on it, the energy. He does not stop, does he?

“He is one of those wingers that, as are a right-back, if you are having a tough afternoon and you are getting tired, you are like, please go to the opposite side, he doesn’t stop,” adds Agbonlahor.

“He will take you on, cut back, take you on, cut back, he doesn’t stop all game.”

Diaz is currently still away on holiday after reaching the final of Copa America with Colombia.

With the 27-year-old not yet returning to the AXA Training Centre, it makes it hard to see exactly what his immediate future will be.

Diaz has said he’s happy at Liverpool but there does remain a lingering debate over whether he is the best man for the job on the left of Slot’s attack.

Cody Gakpo had a very good Euro 2024 and has shown beyond any doubt that his best position is from the left wing.

If Slot sees it the same way, then perhaps Diaz could still leave Liverpool. For now, though, it looks more likely that the Colombia international will stay and that’s good news. His best could be yet to come.
