Paul Merson has suggested that Liverpool could be in big trouble amid ongoing rumours surrounding one of their star players.
The summer transfer window has been a relatively quiet one for the Reds, who are yet to make a major signing and have only seen Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian leave the club at the end of their contracts.
Whilst there have been links to the likes of Nico Williams, things are all quiet for Liverpool in regards to new signings, yet one key player is now being linked with a move away from Anfield in the form of Saudi Arabia.
And Merson thinks this potential deal could be disastrous for Liverpool.

Merson says Virgil van Dijk leaving Liverpool would be a big blow
Speaking on Football’s Greatest, the pundit made the claim that Liverpool selling Virgil van Dijk would be a huge mistake, with the defender now linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
With one year left on his contract, cashing in on Van Dijk could be a financially sound move for Liverpool, yet replacing the defender could be next to impossible if the deal was to actually happen.

Merson said when asked if Liverpool would be in trouble if Van Dijk left: “Oh, end of, end of. Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce of a defender, Rolls-Royce. Phenomenal defender. They would have got beat by Turkey if he wasn’t playing. I thought he was outstanding that day. He was up against it.
“The lad playing against him was a handful. He’s a Rolls-Royce. If he left, it’s like Arsenal. If Arsenal lost Saliba, who I would probably say was the defender of the tournament, in my opinion, I thought he was amazing, I would say no chance. No chance.”

Liverpool would be mental to sell Van Dijk this summer
Van Dijk remains one of the best defenders on the planet, with the Liverpool captain integral to the Reds and new manager Arne Slot if the Dutch coach is to hit the ground running with his new job.
And although an offer worth £50m for a 33-year-old defender with one year remaining on his contract is as tempting as they come, Van Dijk means too much to Liverpool for such a bid to be even considered.
As we know, Liverpool would find it near-impossible to replace a player of Van Dijk’s quality and status, and the Reds must do all they can to keep the defender at Anfield this summer.
