Liverpool could sell three players to help fund move for £38m defender who’s ‘hard to get past’

Liverpool are going to have to quickly start making some moves if they’re to get some business done this summer.

It isn’t only in terms of incomings where the Reds have been exceptionally quiet so far. They haven’t sent much out the other way either.

As things stand, the only players to have been moved on at Anfield are Adrian, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, all of whom were out of contract.

As we’ve seen in years gone by, Liverpool do rely on selling players in order to boost their transfer kitty. If no one is sold, there’s less chance of new additions to the Liverpool squad.

With time beginning to tick down in the window though, the Liverpool owners are reportedly now trying to sell three players in order to buy one.

Liverpool interested in Odilon Kossounou transfer

Of course, there are mitigating circumstances surrounding the transfer window this year. The summer international tournaments have made it a very condensed period for buying players.

From a Liverpool point of view, they’ve also had the upheaval of bringing a new head coach and a new sporting director through the door.

Nevertheless, the Reds are now starting to see some of their Premier League rivals do some interesting business. It’s time to make their move.

According to Caught Offside, we could see some movement from Liverpool very soon.

They claim that the Reds have now made an enquiry over a possible transfer for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Odilon Kossounou.

Kossounou is said to be ‘on the list of targets’ for Liverpool and Leverkusen would likely be happy to make him available for between £34-£38m.

The Reds are claimed to be interested at that price and have reportedly made an initial enquiry about a potential deal. For his part, the Ivorian defender is said to be ready to leave Leverkusen.

Although the fee does not look prohibitive, it’s claimed that Liverpool could look to sell Sepp van den Berg, Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams to help them fund the deal.

Three out, one in for Liverpool

The question of whether Liverpool need another centre-back this season is likely to be dependent on how Arne Slot sees Van den Berg.

The 22-year-old is seemingly being given a chance to prove himself before the Reds make any firm moves in the transfer market.

However, it’s probable that Kossounou would be an upgrade on Van den Berg. Former Leverkusen manager Gerardo Seaone said Kossounou was ‘hard to get past‘ as well as being ‘fast.’

The 23-year-old would be an able third or fourth choice for Liverpool and could develop into a potential starter.

While there’s an argument that the same applies to Van den Berg, it does not for either Phillips or Williams. In our opinion, these three out and Kossounou in would mark an upgrade for Liverpool.
