Liverpool may just have been given hope that they can sign ‘world class’ midfielder this summer

Liverpool are still yet to make any concrete moves in the summer transfer window.

For some fans, they will likely be starting to give up hope that their team will do anything at all before the August 30th deadline.

While that does remain a possibility, it’s clear that Liverpool are keeping their options very much open. If a good chance to add to the first-team squad falls their way, they’ll likely jump at it.

For some, that opportunity was ripe when Leny Yoro decided against joining Real Madrid and moved to Manchester United instead. But Liverpool had their reasons for not buying Yoro.

In the meantime, the Reds still look slightly light in defensive midfield. Thankfully, it now looks like another opportunity could be about to come their way.

Atalanta send out Ederson signal

While Arne Slot does have a fairly large number of midfielders to pick from currently, they do still lack an elite, specialist number six.

Wataru Endo has done a fine job since arriving from Stuttgart almost a year ago. But at 31 he can not be considered anything like a long-term option for Liverpool. Something else is needed.

As a result, the Reds have been tentatively linked to various holding midfielders. It is perhaps not top of their list this summer, but Liverpool are looking for a number six.

One who has cropped up fairly regularly has been Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Liverpool are known fans of Ederson having watched him have an excellent season in Bergamo.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have been in contact with Ederson and his agents about a potential move to Anfield.

For the moment, nothing has been taken any further. However, Atalanta have now been involved in some transfer activity of their own which could signify that something is coming.

The Europa League winners have signed Ibrahim Sulemana from Cagliari. A defensive midfielder, Sulemana could well be the replacement for Ederson.

With a new player now added to the squad, perhaps Atalanta will be more open to an approach from Liverpool.

Keep an eye on Teun Koopmeiners

As well as Ederson, Liverpool have been strongly linked with Teun Koopmeiners, the Brazilian’s midfield partner for Atalanta.

It has even been claimed that Liverpool are more interested in Koopmeiners than Ederson should they be able to sign one this summer.

With Sulemana onboard, it looks virtually certain that Gian Piero Gasperini will lose one of his current midfield options.

The Atalanta manager has already suggested that he would rather that not be Ederson. Speaking earlier this summer, Gasperini labelled Ederson as ‘world class‘ and claimed that he’d prefer the 25-year-old stayed at the Gewiss Stadium.

If that is the case, then perhaps we’ll see Liverpool finally move for Koopmeiners. Either way, it would no longer be a surprise to see either he or Ederson end up at Anfield.
