Find all of the information that you need on the Liverpool squad numbers ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season and which Reds shirts are currently still free to take.

A raft of Liverpool legends have become synonymous with particular shirts since long before players selected unique squad numbers. It was not until the 1993/94 Premier League season that squad numbers became the rule and the use of setting them by positions was scrapped.

Few squad numbers in the modern part of Liverpool’s history also hold more significance at Anfield than the #8 shirt Steven Gerrard wore. The midfielder was already largely associated with #28 and #17 from his emergence before lifting the Champions League title in 2004/05.

Gerrard was not the first Liverpool hero to adopt the #8 shirt as his squad number but made an ever-lasting impact in it. Modern heroes like Trent Alexander-Arnold are also forging their own history at Liverpool whilst wearing squad numbers now synonymous with their names.

So, with that in mind, Rousing The Kop has taken a look at everything that you need to know about Liverpool’s squad number history and their kit numbers for the 24/25 season as they stand. Highlighted are some of the most memorable and recent players to wear each jersey.

This page will be updated with any pending new signings that Liverpool confirm and squad number changes the Reds announce ahead of the upcoming 24/25 season on Merseyside…

Liverpool finally saw a player adopt the #43 jersey when Stefan Bajcetic emerged from their academy in 2022/23. The Spaniard is the only Reds player to ever pick the squad number in the history of Liverpool Football Club. He even wore the #43 shirt with Liverpool’s academy.

Alexander-Arnold has made the #66 Liverpool shirt extremely popular yet his squad number carries no significant meaning. He only became the first Reds player to wear the jersey after Lee Radcliffe, the kit management coordinator, gave him it after first joining the senior team.

“When we get any young lads that come down from the academy, we always deliberately try to give them a high-ish number,” Radcliffe explained back in April 2020. “We don’t like to give them a low number in case they sort of think they’ve made it straight away.”
