Liverpool will have two finalists at Euro 2024 after England beat the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

The Reds were already guaranteed to have at least two players in the Berlin showpiece, with both sides containing Liverpool stars.

And although Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez were resigned to the bench throughout the 2-1 win, they’ll both be dreaming of glory in the German capital on Sunday.

That they can was thanks to a moment of brilliance from Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. The 28-year-old turned Stefan de Vrij brilliantly, buried it past Bart Verbruggen and broke the heart of Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk was fuming with the referee following the game. But while one Liverpool captain was angry and upset, another former skipper was celebrating.

Steven Gerrard sends Ollie Watkins message

England had been poor for most of Euro 2024 up until Wednesday. There’s really no getting away from that.

Gareth Southgate has managed his squad terribly. The England boss has hung Alexander-Arnold out to dry and has treated other players – Gomez included – quite bizarrely.

However, there’s also no escaping the fact that his record at major tournaments is without reproach.

Southgate has now led England to back-to-back finals for the first time in their history.

The former Middlesbrough manager has comfortably beaten what the star-studded teams of the 2000’s managed with all of their resources.

One of the biggest stars of those sides was Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard. The Scouser played in three European Championships but never got beyond the quarter-finals.

Having seen Watkins, his former player at Villa, send England to another final last night, Gerrard was clearly delighted.

Commenting on Watkins’ Instagram post after the game, the Liverpool legend left a heart emoji and a flame emoji, too.

Will Liverpool get a Euros winner?

Liverpool have not had a European Championship winner at the club since 2012. 12 years ago, Pepe Reina made his way back to Anfield with a gold medal around his neck.

Four years earlier, Fernando Torres was the hero, bagging the winner against Germany as the Spanish won their first ever international title. Xabi Alonso and Reina joined him in the squad.

Having collected the World Cup in 2010 in between, it’s Spain who once again have the chance to crown more Liverpool winners to return to the AXA Training Centre in three weeks time.

In reality, England will go into the game as slight underdogs. Luis de la Fuente’s side have been the best team in the tournament so far.

But if the Three Lions can upset the odds and win a first international trophy since 1966, Alexander-Arnold and Gomez will add their names to a small and illustrious list of players to have won the trophy while with Liverpool.
