Liverpool and Chelsea have a bit of a shared story in transfer markets of recent times.
The Reds and the Blues have gone head-to-head for several of the same players during the last few years.
Most notably, Moises Caicedo turned down Liverpool in order to join Chelsea in summer of 2023. Not long after, Romeo Lavia also rejected the Reds and moved to Stamford Bridge.
Before that, Enzo Fernandez had also been a target for Liverpool before joining Chelsea. From an Anfield point of view, Todd Boehly’s free-spending Blues had become a bit of an annoyance.
As a result, it was about time that the tables turned. And it now looks like Liverpool are about to do that in a big way.

Chelsea furious at Liverpool for poaching Rio Ngumoha
Although they’ve often been targeting some of the same players, Liverpool and Chelsea’s approach to the transfer market couldn’t be more different.
While Boehly and co have been basically throwing big money at anything that moves, FSG have been much more measured in their approach.
Part of Chelsea’s strategy has seemingly been to hoover up as much young talent as they can from across the world.
They’ve done eye-catching deals for the likes of South American duo Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, both of whom look like they could be world-beaters.
However, one side effect of bringing in exciting youngsters from abroad is that their own home grown talent can start to get restless.

With the Liverpool academy currently flourishing, for example, other clubs start to look more attractive in terms of a first-team pathway.
That looks to be exactly what is about to happen with Chelsea starlet Rio Ngumoha. According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are now ‘closing in’ on signing the highly-rated forward.
Ngumoha is said to have had his head turned by the ‘pathway and opportunities’ on offer on Merseyside, with February’s Carabao Cup final win said to have been a key contributor. Ironically, of course, that win came over Chelsea.
Having invested so much in securing big prospects during his time at the club so far, Boehly and Chelsea themselves are reportedly ‘furious’ at the likelihood of losing Ngumoha.
Who is Rio Ngumoha?
Ever since the news of Liverpool’s move for Ngumoha broke on Monday, there has been excitement amongst the Reds fanbase.
At just 15, Ngumoha is obviously extremely young. There should be wariness over creating too much hype over a player who does not turn 16 until later in July.
Having said that, there is rightful joy over his poaching. Ngumoha has already trained with the Chelsea first-team and is seen as one of the best young prospects in the country.
His imminent signing is more good news for Liverpool who look to be building a fearsome group of players below the first-team squad.
Alvin Ayman is set to arrive from Wolves as part of the concerted drive to snap up the nations’ premier young talents. With the likes Trey Nyoni and Amara Nallo posed to break through as well, Liverpool are creating something special.
No wonder Ngumoha wants to be a part of it.
