Arne Slot’s first pre-season at Liverpool is underway as the Dutchman finally gets his teeth stuck into some coaching.

Slot must have been dreaming of the moment he can finally get on the training pitch with his new players.

Granted, it was a small group that returned to the AXA Training Centre on Friday, and one which did not contain any of the big stars of the Liverpool squad.

Nevertheless, it must have felt good for the new head coach to be out starting to do what he knows best: working closely with footballers.

Obviously, it won’t be Slot alone who is tasked with guiding Liverpool through a busy pre-season. He’s going to need the help of his backroom staff.

Liverpool set to announce two new additions

Having seen seven of Jurgen Klopp’s team follow the German out of the door at the end of the season, Liverpool have been scrambling to replace them.

So far, Slot has been able to appoint three new coaches to join him at Anfield. Sipke Hulshoff arrives as assistant manager, Ruben Peeters as head of conditioning and Fabian Otte as the new goalkeeping coach.

While most of the key positions are filled, it does have the look of a bare bones team for Slot to currently work with.

As a result, the Dutchman confirmed during Friday’s press conference that Liverpool are still looking to add a couple of new faces.

Following the meeting with reporters, the journalist who asked Slot about potential new additions to his staff – David Lynch – took to his YouTube channel to give a bit more detail about what’s going on.

“We know that he did try and get Etienne Reijnen in from Feyenoord but it’s not looking likely that that will happen,” Lynch explains. “Slot interestingly told me he’s getting two more additions to his coaching staff.

“He said on the guidance of his press officer that he couldn’t say exactly who that could be yet. But that news will be coming imminently. More additions to the coaching staff to come and that’s going to be interesting to see who they are and what roles they will play,” adds the reporter.

“I imagine it won’t be long until we hear a little bit more about those because obviously pre-season starts today [Friday].

“He needs his coaching staff together as soon as possible. So, I’m sure it won’t be too long before we hear who’s those extra coaching staff are.”

What positions could Liverpool be filling?

With a fitness coach, a goalkeeping coach and an assistant manager, Slot has filled three key positions that left the building with Klopp.

As a result, it feels as though any new additions will simply be fleshing out the 45-year-old’s coaching team.

Klopp always operated with two ‘assistants’ in Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz and it will be interesting to see if Slot brings in another senior coach.

Meanwhile, the one role that has not been replaced so far is Vitor Matos’ ‘head of elite development’ position. Given the important work that Matos did between the first-team and the academy, it seems likely that this will be looked at by Liverpool.

The excitement for supporters will be if these roles could be filled by former players or notable names. We should find out soon enough.
