£15m player was in talks to join Liverpool recently but has now turned them down for Juventus

Liverpool are still waiting to add to their squad this summer having failed to make a move in the transfer market yet.

The Reds are usually proactive during the early stages of the window if they are indeed planning to strengthen.

However, with Arne Slot new through the door at Anfield and sporting director Richard Hughes only just put in place too, things have understandably been slow.

There have still been plenty of transfer links though, with a saga surrounding Anthony Gordon recently causing excitement amongst the Liverpool support.

And just as the Gordon situation showed, the Reds have been doing work away from the media spotlight to get players in.

Michele Di Gregorio agent confirms Liverpool talks

One area that Liverpool look likely to be forced to do business in is in terms of their goalkeeping department.

Although he was back to work at the AXA Training Centre on Friday, doubt still surrounds the future of Caoimhin Kelleher. With Kelleher wanting to be a number one somewhere, he could leave this summer.

Adrian also looks set to go, meaning Slot could be without a second and third choice to Alisson Becker.

As a result, Liverpool have been rumoured to be in for a number of goalkeepers, including Monza shot-stopper Michele Di Gregorio.

Di Gregorio was last season’s Serie A goalkeeper of the year and at 26 looks set to be the next top Italian goalie. Like plenty of the best players from the peninsula though, Di Gregorio has had his head turned by Juventus.

The former Inter academy goalie completed a move to Juve on Friday. And speaking to TV Play following the move, his agent, Carlo Belloni, claimed that Liverpool had been turned down along the way.

“Yes, there were talks with Liverpool and obviously we were very pleased,” says Belloni. “But we had given our word and we had clear ideas after Monza.

“However, we had no doubts about the choice after talking to [Juve sporting director, Cristiano] Giuntoli. We stayed loyal to Juve because that’s what he wanted, what Juve wanted, and Thiago Motta is a name that immediately made Di Gregorio’s,” added the agent.

“That is the way it should be. They also awarded him as MVP at the Juventus Stadium and it was a dream fit.”

Who Liverpool could sign instead of Di Gregorio

Di Gregorio would have been a superb option for Liverpool this summer. However, it’s clear that the former Italy U17 international is going to be No.1 at Juventus.

Wojciech Szczesny is reportedly a target for Al Nassr and Di Gregorio looks like the Pole’s direct replacement.

Had he joined Liverpool, there’s no chance Di Gregorio would have been starting over Alisson.

There are obviously rumours regarding Alisson’s future at the moment. For the time being though, it would be a surprise to see the Brazilian leave. As a result, Liverpool need a new No.2, not a new No.1.

Another option for them could be Alisson’s Brazil colleague Bento Krepski. Bento has been linked with Liverpool and could even provide a succession plan when Alisson does eventually call it a day.

Bento would be similar in asking price to the £15m or so Juve have reportedly paid for Di Gregorio and would not break the bank for the Reds.
