Fabrizio Romano says ‘superstar’ can be bought for just £21m three years after Liverpool’s record-breaking offer

Liverpool are still yet to make any concrete moves during the summer transfer window.

The Reds have become well known for getting their business done early and bringing in new signings as soon as possible.

However, almost seven weeks on from the end of the season and Liverpool are still yet to make any concrete steps at all. It looks set to be a quiet summer.

As they’ve shown numerous times in the past, though, FSG can spring into action very quickly and surprise supporters.

Often said to be ‘looking for opportunities’ in the market, Liverpool will act if they see the need to. Keeping that in mind, they could now come back to a deal they reportedly tried to do in 2021.

Juventus set Federico Chiesa asking-price

Liverpool were given a small insight into their transfer activity – or lack of it – when Richard Hughes unexpectedly joined Arne Slot during the head coach’s first-press conference at the club on Friday.

Hughes has so far done little as Liverpool’s new sporting director, with contract situations also still yet to be moved along.

And speaking in that press conference on Friday morning, the former Bournemouth director echoed the sentiment about moving on opportunities in the market.

“It’s a very talented squad,” said Hughes when asked about transfer plans. “We need to improve and we need to improve first and foremost on the training pitch.

“With the window open we will always be opportunistic if we can. If we can improve certain areas as we go we will look to do that. “

And having reportedly tried to sign him in the past, Liverpool could now have one such window regarding Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool reportedly made a huge £85m bid to sign Chiesa in 2021, which was turned down by Juventus. That would have been a record signing for the Reds at the time.

Three years on and having failed to sign a new contract at Juve, Fabrizio Romano says that Chiesea is now available for a knockdown price.

“Juventus consider price tag around €25m [£21m] with add-ons included for Federico Chiesa as current deal expires in June 2025, not being extended,” Romano reports on X.

“Juventus are prepared to sell Chiesa who’s currently not part of Thiago Motta’s plans, as confirmed yesterday.”

Should Liverpool make Federico Chiesa approach?

Three years ago, Chiesa looked like the total package. Fast, two-footed and explosive, the 26-year-old was described as having ‘superstar potential’ by The Independent.

Had Liverpool signed him in 2021, you could easily have seen Chiesa being a superb successor to Sadio Mane when he left a year later, for example.

Unfortunately, the Italian’s career has been blighted by injury ever since then. Having done his ACL in 2022 Chiesa has never quite been the same mix of pace and power he was previously.

Nevertheless, the former Fiorentina man is still a mighty fine player. For the small price it would take to prise him from Juventus, maybe it would be worth it for Liverpool.

They were reportedly looking at Chiesa heavily last summer, but nothing came of it.

Capable of going on either side, perhaps the Italy international could be the opportunity the Reds are looking for to add to their front line. Wages could be an issue, but it’s something to think about.
