Stuart Pearce says ‘magnificent’ Liverpool player reminds him of Glenn Hoddle

Liverpool have a long list of star players currently plying their trade at Anfield, which should massively help Arne Slot in his early stages at the club.

The Dutchman has a big challenge ahead of him after replacing Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside, with the German having moved on at the end of the season.

Slot is currently settling into life in England, having officially taken up his new role at Anfield at the beginning of June.

The former Feyenoord man has a long to-do list, with Slot needing to get to know his group of players as soon as possible.

Deciding exactly how to use them will be key as the Reds look to challenge across various fronts once more.

Stuart Pearce makes Trent Alexander-Arnold and Glenn Hoddle comparison

And one player that should be in for another huge season at Anfield is Trent Alexander-Arnold, although there is uncertainty over the exact role he will play.

Having shone at right-back at club level, the defender has been used in midfield for England, and could play there for the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

Ex-England defender Stuart Pearce is expecting such a role for Alexander-Arnold in Germany, and has compared the Liverpool star to his former international teammate Glenn Hoddle.

“Declan [Rice] can do a bit of everything,” Pearce told talkSPORT. “I think even on the show tonight we might even talk about if there is a role in this tournament for Declan to play further up the pitch like he does for Arsenal.

“I think he can offer a lot more but the balance has got to be right and if he’s got Trent in there, getting the balance right, he’s got to be the quarterback with his passing range.

“I probably liken him to, when I first broke into the England squad, Glenn Hoddle. Glenn probably had one or two question marks about his defensive work but what he could do with the ball at his feet was magnificent – Trent is very similar.”

Gareth Southgate has a big decision to make on the Liverpool right-back

Alexander-Arnold was often used in an inverted full-back role under Jurgen Klopp, appearing at the base of the club’s midfield when in possession of the ball.

But it is with England where he has operated in a more traditional midfield role, with manager Gareth Southgate experimenting with that approach in the build-up to Euro 2024.

That suggests that Alexander-Arnold will occupy the position at the major tournament, but it certainly hasn’t pleased everyone, with Roy Keane claiming that the Liverpool man will get ‘ripped to shreds’ if played in midfield against a top team.

The Anfield ace is clearly very talented, but he does come up against a long list of star players when competing for a starting role.

The likes of Rice and Jude Bellingham are certain to start in midfield for the opener against Serbia, while Southgate will also have to find a place in his XI for Phil Foden.

At right-back meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold is competing with the likes of talented duo Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier.
