‘Incredible’ Liverpool player’s future is now unclear, Arne Slot might want him to leave

Arne Slot’s tenure as Liverpool manager officially got underway last week.

We’re yet to hear from Slot as the Reds new head coach, however the 45-year-old is surely already hard at work.

There’s plenty to sort out for Slot as he gets used to the surroundings at the AXA Training Centre. And although the Liverpool squad won’t report back for a little while, some decisions need to be made.

With the summer transfer window opening soon, most of those calls will be focused on incomings at Anfield. However, there are likely to be a few heading out the exit door, too.

And while Slot figures out which direction contract talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will go, there is another player who’s immediate future is filled with mystery.

Adrian’s Liverpool future remains unclear

For the time being, it seems very unlikely that any of Alexander-Arnold, Salah or Van Dijk will be sold this summer. Whether they’ll sign new deals is another matter, but they don’t look set to leave Liverpool.

As we know, there have already been two players who have made that step to depart the club. Both Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will be free agents from July the 1st.

There is another Liverpool player with a contract set to end, though. Third-choice goalkeeper Adrian is not due to stay at Anfield beyond the end of this month.

The expectation had been that Adrian would leave with his two teammates, especially after he publicly expressed a desire to return to Spain.

However, there was no Anfield goodbye for Adrian last month. That would suggest a concrete decision is yet to be made.

And according to a report in The Athletic, that very much seems to be the case. They claim that the 37-year-old’s future remains ‘unclear’ as the Slot era begins.

The ‘keeper has reportedly ‘played a valuable role behind the scenes and in the dressing room’ but the new head coach could reportedly choose to go ‘in a different direction’. Adrian may leave.

Should Adrian stay at Liverpool?

This is likely to be a topic that will split opinion amongst the fan base. It shouldn’t, really. As third-choice, Adrian is unlikely to see game time and if he’s good for the dressing room, it seems wise to keep him around.

Although he’s garnered a reputation as being a somewhat unreliable goalkeeper, the Spaniard has played his part in triumphs at Liverpool, too.

Adrian was hailed by Jurgen Klopp being ‘incredible’ on his Super Cup-winning debut [The Telegraph] and he featured heavily as Liverpool won the 2019/20 Premier League title. He did his bit.

Regardless of that though, the former West Ham goalie has also made a few high profile blunders. There are some who have simply never gotten over his mistakes against Atletico Madrid in 2020.

Putting all of that together – as well as the fact that second-choice Caoimhin Kelleher may leave – we’d lean towards keeping Adrian.

If he’s open to it, then we don’t see why not.
