What insiders at Liverpool have been saying about transfer links to Jamal Musiala

As the transfer window starts to approach, expect to see Liverpool linked with all kinds of names.

Some of those will be realistic, and a portion will eventually be signed. But as ever, the Reds will be mentioned in connection to a whole host of players who will never arrive.

Indeed, this has started already, with links to Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, for example, feeling like being wide well wide of the mark.

It isn’t just Kimmich who Liverpool reportedly have their eye on from Bayern, though. With Jamal Musiala’s contract situation a little uncertain, the Reds are claimed to have been sniffing around him as well. Addressing those links via CaughtOffside today though, journalist Neil Jones says insiders at Liverpool are – although fans of the player – not hopeful of a deal.

“I know that from a Bayern point of view, they are desperate to retain him, and I also know that pretty much every other top club in Europe, Liverpool included, would want to be in the conversation should he leave,” says Jones. “I don’t imagine Manchester City or Real Madrid would be sitting on their hands there!

“Liverpool’s stance whenever I’ve asked has always been a ‘well, yes, of course we like him’ but as far as I’m aware there is nothing more concrete than that, despite the links,” he added. “If I were a gambler, I’d bet on him staying at Bayern – even if I would love to see him at Anfield!”

Liverpool insiders weigh in on Musiala

It’s hard to believe that Musiala is still only 21. Having been on the scene at Bayern for almost four years already, the Germany international has been playing above his age for years.

Reminiscent of what his former England youth teammate Jude Bellingham is doing at Real Madrid, Musiala has been dominating proceedings at a top European club.

Although he’s been put in the shade a little by the exploits of Harry Kane, the attacking midfielder is still putting up numbers for Bayern.

With 12 goals and six assists this season, Musiala has been consistently excellent yet again. Even Lionel Messi has been impressed. If he really does become available, you’d like to think Liverpool would be right there.

For now, as Jones says, it doesn’t seem especially likely that that will transpire. Bayern would be incredibly foolish to let a player like that go. Not a club to be taken for fools, the Bundesliga champions have already stated their intention to keep Musiala.

Nevertheless, with two years left on his current deal, things could yet become interesting. If another year passes without a resolution, Bayern will have little choice but to cash in.

Still, a year is a long time in football. It feels highly likely that things will all get sorted long before that.

In the meantime, links to Musiala may rumble on in the background. But we wouldn’t be taking them too seriously for now.
