Sometimes there are transfer rumours that come out of nowhere. And a player who most Liverpool fans have never heard of starts to be linked with an unlikely move to Anfield.

Sometimes that deal happens and it’s for the best. Just take a look at Wataru Endo signing from Stuttgart last summer. Not many will have expected him to make the impact that he has since arriving at Anfield.

Others times though they appear to be red herrings, and never end-up at Liverpool. That was definitely the case with Abdul Fatawu back in 2021. During that summer, Fatawu was one of the hottest properties in youth football. He had just guided Ghana to winning the U20 AFCON and was eyed by many clubs, including Liverpool. At the time he was described as a ‘special’ player [First Time Finish].

The Reds seemed very close to get him, but in the end Fatawu ended-up at Sporting CP in Portugal and started catching the eye there including scoring a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut for the club.

Abdul Fatawu could be on Liverpool’s radar again

At Sporting, CP Fatawu was never quite able to showcase his exciting potential. However, the youngster who just turned 20-years-old has since moved on loan to Leicester City in the Championship, where he has been an absolute revelation.

Fatawu has already delivered 14 goal contributions in all competitions for the Championship side and has stood out for his creativity and flair. Playing on the right-wing he’s been a very efficient dribbler and has been very good at making the right decisions in the final third.

It is no secret Liverpool always monitor the brightest young prospects in the Championship. Fatawu currently falls into that category. Having been on the club’s radar three years ago it would not be a surprise if Liverpool were taking a look at him once again.

The Reds may potentially look at bringing in another right-winger to play as a back-up option to Mohamed Salah, and Fatawu fits the profile well. At his age and with his potential, he may even end up not just a back-up but a future heir to Salah’s throne.
