Two years ago, Jarell Quansah wasn’t lining up for Liverpool against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He was in action for England’s U19 side as they beat Armenia 4-0 in Rotherham.
In that game, the Liverpool youngster showed flashes of what he would later go onto do at Old Trafford. During the first six minutes of the match, Quansah received the ball on the halfway line and ran forward, beating a couple of Armenian defenders before sending a brilliant through-ball into his England teammate inside the penalty area to opening the scoring.
That day Quansah was one of England’s best players, not only registering an assist but also scoring in the Three Lions’ 4-0 win. It was the kind of performance which later caught the eye of League One scouts. The next season, he would spend six months on loan at Bristol Rovers. Those six months provided the important foundation for him to make the step-up at Liverpool.

What Jarell Quansah did vs Manchester United
Now playing in the first team, Quansah has had a few moments like that recently for Liverpool as well. Last weekend against Manchester City he brushed past Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland, going on an impressive run to get a shot on goal.
Today Quansah ran through United’s midfield beating the likes of Marcus Rashford to help create Liverpool’s equaliser in the first-half. More and more his quality on the ball is shining through.
Again he completed the most passes on the pitch (94) against Manchester United, and was hardly at fault for any of the United goals. Defensively, he won five out of seven duels, four out of five aerial duels and made six clearances and three interceptions.
The result may not have gone Liverpool’s way, but what Quansah did definitely showed a bright future ahead. Having a defender who can step forward from attack and beat players to open up space for his teammates is such useful trait. It’s why Joel Matip has been so valuable to Liverpool for so many years. Now in Quansah, Liverpool have definitely found his successor.
