When rumours of Michael Edwards returning to the club first broke out, it seemed like a far fetched fantasy. The Edwards chapter at FSG and Liverpool seemed to have been closed. However, it seems like that was not the case.
As The Times has reported, Edwards has agreed to return to Liverpool and FSG. Two years on from leaving the club, he will be back at the helm in a more senior role than before.
This is huge news for Liverpool. With Jurgen Klopp leaving the club, the Reds need stability and continuity. There is no one better to achieve that than Edwards, who played an integral role in building Klopp’s successful Liverpool team.
The hard-work will now begin for Edwards. Not only will he play a role in identifying Klopp’s successor. There is another priority that he must also accomplish first.

Michael Edwards’ first priority
According to the above mentioned report from The Times, Edwards’ first priority will be to appoint Richard Hughes as the club’s sporting director. Hughes has recently left his role at Bournemouth and he is known to be a close acquaintance to Edwards.
Over the last few years, the former Bournemouth and Portsmouth player has achieved a lot of success at Bournemouth. He brought in the likes of Nathan Ake, Aaron Ramsdale and Dominic Solanke, among others.
Last summer, he also made exciting recruitments such as Milos Kerkez, who was even on the radar of Liverpool.
Working under Edwards, someone who he knows well from their time together at Portsmouth, Hughes could be the perfect appointment for Liverpool. The sporting director is a position Liverpool needed to find a long-term solution for and Hughes may be the perfect candidate.
