Today has been an exciting day for Liverpool supporters worldwide. There have been a lot of murmurs about the potential return of Michael Edwards to the club. Now it has been confirmed in an official press release by FSG.

Edwards has returned to FSG as head of football operations in what is a major coup for the Reds. He will operate alongside a sporting director at Liverpool and he will not just be in charge of the Reds but it is expected he will take charge of another football club as well.

The former sporting director left his position at Anfield after a decade working at Liverpool back in 2022. Since then he has worked at a data analytics company Ludonautics founded by another former Liverpool employee Ian Graham. But Edwards will now leave his role at Ludonautics in June to return working under FSG.

Michael Edwards on why he returned to FSG

In an official statement released by FSG as per journalist David Lynch, Edwards revealed one of the biggest factors in his decision to return was to oversee another club.

“I am very grateful to Mike, John, Tom and the ownership group for offering me the opportunity to take on this new leadership role within FSG,” Edwards said. “I was humbled by the desire and persistence they showed in wanting to work with me again. This is definitely not something that I take for granted given their track record across sport and business.

“It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy. In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities. As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organization. I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.”

This would suggest FSG are planning towards a multi-club model. Something many of the club’s rivals already possess, including Manchester City with its vast City Group network that spans several continents.

The fact that Liverpool are stepping in that direction as well is an exciting development. Almost as exciting as the return of Edwards at the helm of football operations.

Jurgen Klopp may be leaving the club at the end of the season, but it seems like an exciting new chapter could be about to begin.
