Liverpool are reportedly set to send scouts to watch Porto’s Champions League last-16 second-leg with Arsenal this evening.
The Reds have seemingly taken an interest in midfielder Alan Varela. And according to reports in Portugal today, Liverpool talent spotters will be in attendance to watch Varela at the Emirates tonight.
We think that’s a great idea, personally. The 22-year-old has been a standout performer this season and even if Porto do want his full £60m release clause, Varela could be worth it.
Aside from the Argentine though, we actually think there’s another talent Liverpool’s scouts should have their eye on in North London. In fact, there are a couple.
Forward Evanilson has been doing the business for Porto for a couple of years now and will be a real threat to Arsenal. He’s a player who could perhaps be of interest to the Reds.
But even more than Varela and Evanilson, we think Liverpool should be paying closet attention to centre-back Otavio. He’s going to be a star.
Otavio making Porto impact
Otavio at Porto is perhaps not the Otavio at Porto you’re thinking of. Liverpool were linked for years with a move for Portuguese international winger Otavio Edmilson da Silva Monteiro, who eventually joined Al Nassr last year.
No, this is a different chap, albeit with the same name. In terms of playing style though, Otavio Ataide da Silva could hardly be more different to his namesake.
The older man is a skilful and direct winger with a real goal threat. The Otavio we’re talking about is a commanding young centre-back.
Just 21, Otavio only arrived at Porto in January from Famalicao. Since then though, he has quickly gone about business for the Primeira Liga giants.

Having made his debut on February 17th, Otavio has played 90 minutes in four of Porto’s five matches since, including starring in a scintillating 5-0 win over rivals Benfica. Safe to say he’s firmly settled in as a starter for Sergio Conceicao.
A product of the Flamengo youth academy, Otavio has been terrific since coming into the side. On just his second start for the club, the Brazilian youngster kept a clean sheet as Porto held Arsenal at bay.
During that game at the Dragao, Otavio won 100% of his tackles, 100% of his ground duels, made two blocks, two clearances and two recoveries. It was a masterclass.
If that game marked Otavio out as one to keep an eye on, then tonight he could repeat the trick. With Liverpool potentially on the lookout for a new centre-back this summer, they should be watching on with interest.
