Even though at boardroom level Liverpool still have important appointments to make within the recruitment team, it doesn’t mean the club’s scouts are sitting idle. The summer is not far away now and Liverpool will be drawing up a potential shortlist of players for the club’s prospective new manager.
A scouts job is always to identify players in every position. Much of where Liverpool will look to recruit players will depend on who the new manager wants, and the kind of style he would like to play.
Priorities areas at the moment seem to be in defence and in attack. But bringing in another midfielder should also not be ruled out. Liverpool invested a lot into the club’s midfield last summer. However, there is still probably room for one more midfielder.
That midfielder could be an Argentine star, who is set to face Arsenal in the Champions League today. According to one report, Liverpool will be watching him closely.

Alan Varela is on Liverpool’s transfer radar
According to Portuguese outlet, Record, Liverpool are interested in Porto midfielder, Alan Varela. The report also claims that Liverpool will have scouts present at the game to watch him in action against Arsenal today.
Varela only recently moved to Porto last summer. He joined the Portuguese side from Boca Juniors, where Alexis Mac Allister has also played in the past. Since arriving at Porto, Varela has been a revelation.
A central midfielder who can play box-to-box or drop deeper into a holding midfield role, Varela ticks a lot of boxes for Liverpool. He has a release clause of £60m according to Record’s report, which is a steep figure. But he is only 22-years-old and clearly has a few more levels to reach in order to fulfil his full potential.
He is definitely someone to keep an eye out on today.
