Yesterday’s game between Liverpool and Manchester City was all about Jurgen Klopp’s side’s defensive resilience. The Reds kept Manchester City at bay. Pep Guardiola’s team really struggled to create chances from open play.

The City boss even admitted as such, praising Liverpool for their defensive structure. But while the focus will be on Man of the Match, Wataru Endo. Or the brilliance of Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah. One man definitely will have gone under the radar.

He is someone who has gone under the radar all season in all honesty. Jurgen Klopp, though, gave him a special mention post-match, and even seemed to send Gareth Southgate a not so subtle message. Whether he will heed it, only time will tell.

Jurgen Klopp on Joe Gomez

Speaking post-match to Sky Sports, Jurgen Klopp turned towards the camera and said: “Joe Gomez. Gareth, honestly.”

The Liverpool boss refereeing to his players performance and Gomez’s lack of recognition at international level over the last few years. Despite some solid performances lately, Gomez has still not received an England call-up.

Klopp has made it clear in the past he does not agree with Gareth Southgate’s decision. This season is proof that Gomez is very much deserving of a place in the England squad. He’s proved himself capable playing anywhere across the back four for Liverpool.

But it’s not just Gomez, who probably deserves that Three Lions call-up. Over the course of the campaign, Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott have both proved themselves worthy of the recognition. Meanwhile, if it wasn’t for an injury Curtis Jones would probably deserve a call-up as well.

It’s time Southgate listened to Klopp’s advice. England would only be better as a result.
