Today against Manchester City, much of the game was dominated by Liverpool. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t any moments in which it felt like City threatened Jurgen Klopp’s side.

In fact, for periods in the first-half, Pep Guardiola’s team were probably the better side. In those times Liverpool’s defence was really tested to its limits. So it’s huge credit that the Reds thwarted most of Manchester City’s attempts.

From open play, Guardiola’s team couldn’t really create much. They were limited to a few opportunities. But on the whole, Virgil van Dijk and the rest of the Liverpool defence stood-up to the task and defended excellently.

Virgil van Dijk on Jarell Quansah’s performance

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Virgil van Dijk was really impressed by the performance of Jarell Quansah. The Liverpool captain signalled him out for special praise and said the sky was the limit for the 20-year-old centre-back.

“Obviously, very well.” Van Dijk replied when the reporter asked him a question about Quansah standing beside him.

“It’s a nice story. I think when he came back from loan in pre-season, I don’t think he would’ve thought he would be playing for the title. He’s been important. Every challenge that was thrown his way, he dealt with it. Outstanding. And the sky is the limit, so he has to just stay humble and keep working hard, and keep improving because there will be a lot of bumps along the road as well.”

It’s great to hear Van Dijk speak so highly of Jarell Quansah. Certainly, the Liverpool defender has been excellent over the course of the entire season. The fact that he is now receiving recognition from one of the best in the business speaks volumes of the talent that Quansah is.
