Chelsea move ahead of Liverpool with plans to sign ‘incredible’ attacker this summer

Chelsea have seemingly stolen a march on Liverpool yet again in the transfer window.

Although the Reds have had the beating of the Blues where it really matters this season – on the pitch – transfer battles between the two sides have gone the other way recently.

After both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia chose Stamford Bridge over Anfield last year, Sports Lens report that there could now be another name to add to that list.

They claim that Chelsea have identified Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as a ‘genuine option’ to replace Raheem Sterling this summer.

Williams is said to be keen to test himself somewhere outside of the club he grew up and Chelsea have reportedly begun to close in.

Nevertheless, Liverpool are also still claimed to be waiting in the wings. Although the Reds interested doesn’t seem especially urgent, they are reportedly still scouting Williams ahead of any potential move.

Liverpool being left behind on Williams

Williams is a really interesting prospect who Liverpool have reportedly been keeping a close eye on for a while now.

However, given that he’s more of a left-sided right winger, there is a reason he isn’t a priority.

Among their five elite attacking options, four of them can play in the same role. Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are both arguably better through the middle, but they can and have played off the left, too.

Some supporters would argue that there’s some sense in looking for a potential upgrade on Luis Diaz. But Diaz has improved of late and is still more prolific than Williams, although is six years older.

There is a chance that Liverpool are looking into signing a forward this summer. However, we’d wager that any such addition is likely to be a left-footed player, to ease the burden or take over from Mohamed Salah.

Now, if Williams fitted that bill, then the Reds would perhaps be all over him. Brother Inaki – also a former Liverpool target – has described his younger sibling as being an ‘incredible’ player [Sports World Ghana]. It has been a big season for Nico.

Still just 21, he already has over 100 appearances for Athletic under his belt and is a fully-capped international star, too. His future is very bright.

For his sake, hopefully that future won’t be spent at Chelsea. Liverpool may not be coming all guns blazing as they did with Caicedo and Lavia. But if Nico asks both of those players for a recommendation, he’s perhaps unlikely to get it.
