Manchester United legend admits he was once a member of Liverpool’s supporters club

Supporters always like to imagine that the players who represent their clubs are as invested in its success as they are.

In Liverpool’s case, that’s why the achievements of local lads like Steven Gerrard and Trent Alexander-Arnold often mean that little bit more. They’ve been Reds their whole lives.

However, another Liverpool legend – Jamie Carragher – is instant proof that this isn’t always the case. Carragher was famously an Everton fan growing up. And now, appearing on the Stick to Football podcast, the Scouser had a front-row seat for a surprising admission from a Manchester United legend. A certain Mr Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Were you a Liverpool fan growing up?!” Gary Neville asked his former United teammate. “I know it’s not something you’d ever want to admit…”

“You learn as long as you live!” Solskjaer replied. “Probably the only player that’s played for Man United that was a member of the Liverpool supporters club! I never bothered ringing them up after I signed [for United] to stop the membership.”

Asked if his boyhood club had ever come in to sign him though, the former striker brushed it off. “There was a time not long before they were interested [in signing him] but they never came in,” he said.

Solskjaer admits Liverpool history

Clearly, Solskjaer is no longer a Liverpool fan. His membership has long since expired.

Having joined United direct from Molde in 1996, the Norwegian went on to spend 11 years at Old Trafford. Featuring in the Manchester club’s most dominant era in their history, he won the lot several times over.

Following an impressive playing career, Solskjaer then took up the reigns as manager in 2018. Although initially a temporary gig, he ended up staying almost three years at the helm.

During that period, Solskjaer was very much seen as something of a ‘Mr Man United.’ Keen on restoring the club to its former glories, he always had the backing of the fans, despite some heavy defeats.

Those who supported him so heartily are unlikely to be upset by this news today. Just look at Carragher for example. His Everton past is well known and yet never stopped him from becoming a hero at Anfield.

As one of the biggest clubs on the planet – and perhaps the very biggest when Solskjaer was growing up in the 1980’s – Liverpool have fans all over the planet.

It’s not uncommon that players who end up becoming rivals once had an almighty soft spot for them. More recently, Kevin De Bruyne is another to have been bitten by the Liverpool bug as a youngster. Nowadays he’s about as Manchester City as it gets.

Still, there’s always time to see the light, Ole. Surely that childhood obsession is still lingering in there somewhere. Kevin too. Don’t fight it, lads!
