Ian Wright says Liverpool have a player who’s just like Phil Foden at the moment

Liverpool will go head-to-head with one of the most in-form players in the Premier League this weekend, as Phil Foden’s Manchester City come to town.

Foden has been superb over recent weeks for City. Since the turn of the year, the 23-year-old has scored nine goals and provided four assists over 11 games. He’ll need to be watched like a hawk at Anfield on Sunday.

But according to Ian Wright, Liverpool have a player who is equally as influential for them right now.

Speaking on his Wrighty’s House podcast yesterday, the former Arsenal striker hailed the impact of Darwin Nunez for the Reds. According to Wright, Nunez is Liverpool’s very own Phil Foden.

“Love that, love the way they did it,” the pundit said on the Reds’ late 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

“Delighted for Nunez because he gets so much [stick]. But he’s captain chaos and something’s happening. Something’s happening off of him. He’s one of those players. Like Foden is, he is that one for Liverpool.”

Nunez gets Foden comparison

With the likes of Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota still out injured, there’s little doubt that Nunez is the main man in Liverpool’s attack right now.

Jurgen Klopp obviously does have other options. However, it’s fair to say that neither Luis Diaz nor Cody Gakpo carry anything like the threat of the big Uruguayan.

Liverpool look like a totally different team when their No.9 is on the pitch. It isn’t just his physical and technical attributes either. Nunez also just looks like he simply wants it more than anyone else.

When you’re fighting for three different trophies with a depleted squad and some big names missing, you can’t put a price on that mentality.

As Wright points out, Nunez has certainly had his detractors during his time with the Reds so far. But surely even his most ardent critic couldn’t fail to give him his due right now.

With City and Foden up next, it’s absolutely vital that Liverpool have the 24-year-old fit and ready to for the weekend.

If that means Nunez sitting out of tomorrow night’s trip to Sparta Prague, then so be it. There shouldn’t be any risk taken.

Come Sunday though, you get the feeling that Darwin is going to be like a caged animal. He’s got himself some big goals for Liverpool so far this season. Another against Foden and co at Anfield could be his biggest yet.
