When the chips are down for Liverpool, Darwin Nunez is the man of the moment. He’s been the club’s savior time and again this season, pulling the Reds out of situations that could have been costly.

Nunez was the driving force behind that late surge of goals against Newcastle United earlier on in the season, scoring twice in that game. That itself was special. But yesterday’s moment against Nottingham Forest may have been even more special. A moment that could prove to be a very significant one in Liverpool’s quest for the Premier League title this season.

For much of the game against Forest yesterday, it felt like luck had deserted Jurgen Klopp’s team. Nothing seemed to click. Nottingham had done a great job at frustrating the Reds, and the pressure mounted with each passing second, especially into added time. Then suddenly, out of the blue, Nunez arrived. An absolutely sublime chipped pass from Alexis Mac Allister found the Uruguayan in the box, and he did what he does best – score goals for Liverpool.

By getting that goal, Nunez wrote his name and Liverpool’s into the history books. After all, this was the Reds’ first victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the Premier League. Meanwhile, this was the latest goal scored by a Liverpool player in the Premier League since records began. And on top of that, Nunez also matched a very impressive Erling Haaland record from this season.

Taking a look at match-winners scored by players in the Premier League, Darwin Nunez is now on five for the season according to Transfemarkt. That means no one has scored more match winners than the Uruguayan this season.

The only two other players who have matched Nunez’s record in the Premier League this season are Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins, who both also have five match winners this season.

But neither have scored match winners in extra time yet. Watkins’ latest winner was in the 85th minute, meanwhile Haaland’s was in the 71st. Not to mention 50% of Nunez’s goals for Liverpool this season in the Premier League have been match winners, which just proves he is the man for the big occasions.
