Before Liverpool sort out who will manage the club next season after Jurgen Klopp departs, they also have to sort out who will be the club’s sporting director. There have been several candidates although at this time the best one on paper is definitely not a new but an old name.
Since the beginning of this week there have been murmurs of Michael Edwards potentially returning to Liverpool. He is by far and away the best possible candidate for the job. Given his track record and familiarity with Liverpool – he would be able to establish the continuity that he needs.
He’s also got a proven track record of making the right decisions on the recruitment front. Edwards is simply the best in the business when it comes to sporting directors. Liverpool would be wise to bring him back. It could be the best decision FSG made in years.
If Edwards does return, Liverpool may have another potential candidate for the managerial role as well. Someone who has coached at Liverpool in the past, and who knows Edwards well.

Gary O’Neil could be Michael Edwards’ Liverpool candidate
The man in question is of course Gary O’Neil, who has done a brilliant job at Wolverhampton this season. Just this week he guided the club to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. He is also currently one point away from a European spot in the Premier League and above both Chelsea and Newcastle United.
In the past, O’Neil actually spent time coaching at Liverpool. According to a report by The Telegraph, O’Neil actually joined Liverpool on the recommendation of Michael Edwards. The pair of them have a long working relationship which goes all the way back to 2003. Edwards first met O’Neil while the pair of them were at Portsmouth. O’Neil was a player, and Edwards was an analyst. Together they bonded, and have remained close ever since.
Now fast forward to the present. Given O’Neil’s recent track record, if Edwards does return to Liverpool, you cannot rule him out as a potential candidate. Clearly’s he’s got a good working relationship with Edwards, and has proven himself at a top level in the Premier League.
