There was a lot of talk about Liverpool’s academy products on Wednesday night. But it wasn’t just at Anfield where they shone in the FA Cup last night. Away from Liverpool, there was a former Liverpool academy coach who recorded another impressive result for his side.

Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton beat Brighton to reach the quarterfinals of the competition. A fantastic 1-0 victory at home was enough to secure an important result for O’Neil’s side, who have been playing some really good football under him.

Since O’Neil has taken charge of Wolves, his side has been in brilliant form. They currently find themselves 9th on the Premier League table above Newcastle United and Chelsea. Now they’ve got an FA Cup quarter-final to look forward to against Coventry City as well.

Gary O’Neil emulating Jurgen Klopp

Amid the celebrations at Wolverhampton on Wednesday night, Gary O’Neil was spotted pumping his fists in the air in front of the Wolves supporters in very Jurgen Klopp fashion.

It’s great to see O’Neil celebrating in this fashion. He actually started his coaching career at Liverpool and spent six months at the club’s academy. He was the assistant manager to Barry Lewtas, in charge of Liverpool’s U21 team during the 2020/21 season.

During that time, O’Neil coached the likes of Sepp van den Berg, Tyler Morton, Owen Beck and Conor Bradley. Before going onto manage at Bournemouth and doing a really good job there as the club’s head-coach last season.

Only 40-years-old. He’s clearly a talented manager, and it’s great to see him thriving at the moment.
