There were plenty of positives for Liverpool last night. The youngsters will undoubtedly take the spotlight for Liverpool. But last night wasn’t just about the young players.
It was also about the fringe or squad Liverpool players who allowed them to thrive. Players like Harvey Elliott, who stepped up at the right moment to produce another terrific performance. That in spite of playing 120 minutes at Wembley and 90 minutes exactly a week prior against Luton.
Yet Elliott was brilliant. And he wasn’t the only one. There was another more experienced Liverpool player who really caught Jay Spearing’s eye. According to the Liverpool U21 player and coach, he has been the unsung hero for Liverpool this season.

Jay Spearing on Joe Gomez
Speaking on Liverpool’s official podcast, Jay Spearing was full of awe for Joe Gomez after the game last night. Spearing praised Gomez for his professionalism and described him as an ‘unsung’ hero.
“To be fair for me, I think he’s been Liverpool’s unsung hero all year,” Spearing said.
“I think he’s been absolutely outrageously good. I think he’s been incredible. I think he adjusted just like the boss said then, he adjusted to left-back, centre-back, right-back as a six tonight and he’s took everything in his stride. You never hear about Joe Gomez moaning. You never hear about Joe Gomez like being a bad egg or anything like that. For me, he just seems to be the ultimate professional. He wants to play for Liverpool. He loves playing for Liverpool.”
Gomez was fantastic for Liverpool last night and we can see why Spearing has described him as an unsung hero. He played as a holding midfielder for Liverpool, making this yet another different position that Jurgen Klopp has asked him to play this season. The 26-year-old is a true utility man, and he has been ever so important for Liverpool.
