German football legend Lothar Matthaus has tipped Xabi Alonso to have no interest in joining Liverpool right now.

The Bayer Leverkusen manager has been strongly linked with the Anfield job at the end of this season, with Jurgen Klopp set to call time on an incredible nine-year career at Liverpool this summer.

With Alonso leading Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title with the DFB Pokal and UEFA Europa League also on the table, there’s good reason why the former Liverpool midfielder is now being considered to replace Klopp.

Yet writing for Sky Germany, pundit Matthaus has now claimed that Alonso might now have little interest in joining Liverpool, with the Basque coach potentially on focussed on finishing his work at Leverkusen.

Matthaus wrote: “Xabi Alonso is not yet interested in Bayern Munich, nor is Liverpool and Real Madrid interested in him yet. He is only interested in winning three titles with Leverkusen in the next two and a half months.

“The way he was as a player is how he is now as a coach. He stays true to his character. The stories that are being played out now and in the coming weeks and months leave him cold.

“He has no pressure and can look at things in a relaxed manner. Maybe it’s his dream to coach Bayern, Liverpool or Real at some point. But in my opinion he is not finished in Leverkusen yet.”

Alonso has been the clear favourite for the Liverpool job the second news broke that Klopp would be leaving the Reds at the end of this season.

And whilst the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid star still holds this title, it might soon be time for Liverpool to really expand their search for a new manager heading into the summer.

As we know, Alonso might not be eager just yet to return to Liverpool as manager, and for the Anfield giants, that means they must now expand their pool of targets if they’re to transition from Klopp smoothly.
