‘Absolute disgrace’… Ben Foster reacts after hearing who was Liverpool’s Man of the Match at Wembley

Even 48 hours later, we are still very much talking about Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final victory. To many the League Cup may not represent a huge honour. There are undoubtedly bigger trophies to be won. But that should not undermine the scale of Liverpool’s achievements on Sunday night.

Jurgen Klopp, was without a plethora of first team players. Players who would have normally been in the club’s starting XI. This was far from ideal heading into a major cup final. Especially after Chelsea had started to gain a bit of momentum and even managed to get a result against Manchester City recently.

But Klopp’s men managed to ride the wave of pressures, and his fringe and academy players rose to the occasion to ultimately not only weather the Chelsea storm but also start to dominate their opponent. In the end it was enough to create a special memory. One that will last a lifetime for the club’s young players, and a lifetime for all the supporters as well.

Ben Foster on Caoimhin Kelleher

In order to lift the trophy, Liverpool very much needed the contributions of Caoimhin Kelleher. Time and time again the Irish goalkeeper kept the Reds in the game with some outstanding saves. He was reminiscent of Alisson Becker at his best, and worthy of the Man of the Match accolade.

However, officially it was Virgil van Dijk who was awarded Man of the Match in the final for his contribution, which was equally as important. Van Dijk was excellent at the back for Liverpool and also scored the winning goal.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Ben Foster couldn’t believe that decision though. He described the decision not to award the Man of the Match to Kelleher as a ‘disgrace.’

“Bit of goalie love if we can lads,” Foster said on his own podcast called Fozcast. “His calmness as well, he’s not the first choice goalie but whenever I watch him play I think you are made for this mate. He didn’t get Man of the Match did he? It’s a disgrace, it’s an absolute disgrace!”

Kelleher probably deserved it as much as Van Dijk, and we agree he should have gotten the recognition as well. But considering the Liverpool captain got the winner, no one can argue with the decision that was made.
