Liverpool’s triumph in the Carabao Cup final last night was all about the club’s youngsters. This was a game Liverpool had absolutely no right to win given the circumstances that they were up against. With so many key players missing in a cup final, it would have been understandable if the Reds struggled on Sunday.
But if anything, Liverpool were the better side against a Chelsea team who had benefitted from hundreds of pounds of investment over the last few years. A Chelsea team that was full of big money signings yet to deliver.
Liverpool on the other hand, finished the game with three players who hadn’t even started a Premier League game. Three others who had started five or less games in the Premier League this season. Given the disparity, if Liverpool capitulated, it wouldn’t have been a surprise. But the youngsters showed maturity beyond their years. They didn’t capitulate but instead rose to the challenge to deliver a fantastic performance.

Jurgen Klopp on the development of his youngsters
Speaking after the game in his post-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp was in awe of the three youngsters who came on late at the end of the second-half. Jayden Danns received special praise, but Klopp also highlighted both Bobby Clark and James McConnell as well.
“In the end, you follow us obviously pretty closely and the development of Bobby Clark… that’s really crazy I have to say,” Klopp said as per the club’s official website.
“The development of James McConnell is absolutely insane, and Jayden Danns has only recently joined us in first-team training. I loved him from the first second; really special. And he comes on today, OK he played in the last game, but he can score two goals in a Carabao Cup final. It’s absolutely insane.”
Klopp is right. The way these players just keep coming through and stepping up to the occasion every single time is ‘insane.’ There is no precedence for anything like this. There has never been such an exciting young group of players at Anfield.
Clark and McConnell were brilliant on the night. They were the equals to players like Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, all while playing in front of 90 thousand fans at Wembley. That is simply special. Liverpool’s future is very bright.
