On the 87th minute in the Carabao Cup final last night, some may have tilted the game in Chelsea’s favour. Jurgen Klopp had just introduced two players on the pitch for Liverpool who hadn’t started a single Premier League game for the club.

The two players in Jayden Danns and James McConnell were both inexperienced. The latter was making his first appearance in the League Cup for Liverpool. Danns had only played a few minutes for Liverpool’s first team prior to the game. Meanwhile, Bobby Clark was also on the pitch by then. With a grand total of eight first team appearances under his belt, he was the most experienced of the lot.

To come in during any game against an opponent like Chelsea would have been a tough ask. But to do it in a final was gargantuan. Most young players would have crumbled under the pressure of even just playing on the hallowed Wembley turf in front of 90 thousand people. But these Liverpool youngsters never looked out of place.

If anything, they took to the cup final like a duck to water and helped Liverpool seize control of the match in extra-time. It was a performance which impressed many including former academy graduate, Stephen Warnock.

Stephen Warnock on Connor Gallagher reaction to Bobby Clark

Clark as the most experienced of Liverpool’s young trio, and the player who spent the most time on the pitch put in a very impressive performance on the night. The 19-year-old never shied away from the physical challenges and participated in 12 duels in total. He also won two out of his two attempted tackles.

Speaking after the game on Liverpool’s official podcast channel, former Liverpool player, Stephen Warnock was really impressed by Clark’s performance. He also pointed out how he noticed Conor Gallagher being amazed by the youngster as well.

“I thought Bobby Clark was exceptional. When he came onto the pitch, he pressed Conor Gallagher straight away and you could see Conor Gallagher thinking, who’s this young kid?” Warnock said.

“And I said to Ronnie [Whelan] when we were watching it, the big thing is, a lot of the Chelsea players won’t know these kids, they wouldn’t have seen them play that often, so it’s a surprise to them.

“He’s taken the ball under pressure, bringing it down on his chest, relieving the pressure, taking passes in tight situations. I thought his display today was head and shoulders above his age and above his maturity. It was an exceptional performance.”

Clark was brilliant and speaks volumes of his talent that he was able to step-up into a game of this magnitude so well. Liverpool have plenty of injury concerns in midfield, especially with Ryan Gravenberch’s knock, which means Clark should now get plenty more opportunities to shine on the pitch.
