Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup after an incredible performance against Chelsea at Wembley.
Despite so many injury problems, the Reds battled through against the Blues to win the trophy for a record tenth time.
And what a moment the winning goal was. With so many youngsters out on the pitch – including the impressive Bobby Clark – it was the captain who stepped up to win it. It was only ever going to be Virgil van Dijk.
As Van Dijk glanced home a header from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner, there was bedlam inside Wembley. And as BBC Sport journalist Alex Howell noted, a lot of that was coming from the Liverpool bench.
“The Liverpool backroom team and players jumped over the advertising hoarding to celebrate that goal from Van Dijk,” Howell reported. Great scenes.
Van Dijk wins Carabao Cup for Liverpool
Of course it had to be Virgil. Surrounded by players making their first steps in senior football, everyone was looking up to the Reds captain.
But it wasn’t just the goal, Van Dijk was astonishingly good all game long for Liverpool.
Against a talented Chelsea team, Virgil and Ibrahima Konate stood up all game long. Alongside the incredible Caoimhin Kelleher, they ensure that absolutely nothing was getting through.
But Van Dijk was the main man. If ever anybody needed proof that he’s the right man for the Liverpool captaincy, they got it right there.
Without the attacking talents they can usually rely upon, it felt like the goal had to come from a set-piece.

Having already seen one unbelievably ruled out earlier in the game, you just wondered whether Virgil’s moment had gone.
But there he was, rising brilliantly in the box to win the Carabao Cup for his club.
It’s a moment that will be celebrated long into the night in Liverpool and one that was received accordingly by the Reds backroom staff and the players on the bench.
What a football club.
