It was a special night for Liverpool and a special night for Jurgen Klopp. The Reds got the victory they wanted, but they had to work hard to get it. Klopp’s men fought to the very end until Virgil van Dijk popped up with a sensational winner.
The result and the celebrations were well deserved. On paper, Liverpool may have been the favourites to win the game. But in reality, with so many players missing, the Reds were really the underdogs in this match-up.
Klopp had to field three players in extra-time who hadn’t even started a Premier League game for Liverpool yet. But even that didn’t stop Liverpool from controlling the game and continuing to cause Chelsea problems. The Reds well and truly deserved to win the match, and that’s why the celebrations were so cathartic once Van Dijk’s header thumped into the back of the net.

Jurgen Klopp on Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez
Among the two players who were most eager to join the celebrations were Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai who jumped down from the stands behind the bench to rush onto the pitch. Nunez sprinted onto the Wembley turf, meanwhile Szoboszlai jumped up to embrace Klopp.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Klopp addressed that moment and revealed they looked ‘100%’ during the celebrations as per the Liverpool ECHO’s Theo Squires.
“Darwin and Dom are not fit, that’s why they didn’t play, but in the celebrations they looked 100% so I will have to speak with the medical department about that,” Klopp said.
The way Szoboszlai and Nunez reacted to the goal definitely is a positive sign. Klopp’s post match comments are even more positive. It suggests the two Liverpool stars could be back on the pitch very soon. That’s going to be a huge boost for the Reds.
