Virgil van Dijk provided Liverpool with an enormous moment to win today’s Carabao Cup final.
With the game ticking towards a penalty shootout, Van Dijk rose highest to win the trophy for the Reds. It was a real captain’s moment from the centre-back who sent the Liverpool bench into bedlam.
And having been the game’s most important player, it was Van Dijk who was first to face the post-match cameras from Sky Sports.
After praising the job of his teammates and especially the numerous youngsters on the pitch for Liverpool, former teammate Daniel Sturridge said that he spotted something unusual from Van Dijk.
“Virgil seemed more emotional than I’ve seen him,” said Sturridge.
“You can tell it means a lot, Jurgen Klopp’s last season, his first trophy as captain, he’s proud of the young players and you can just see his delight in that interview.”
Van Dijk gets emotional
It is indeed rare to see Liverpool’s ice-cold captain looking a little tearful. But Virgil really was sounding emotional this evening.
And well he might. It was a really charged occasion for the Reds at Wembley.
As Sturridge mentions, the game felt quite a bit bigger than a Carabao Cup final ordinarily might.
With it being Jurgen Klopp’s last season, every game feels like it has taken on extra significance. But a chance to win another trophy under the German simply had to be taken.
Another reason for Van Dijk’s emotion was of course the circumstances in which Liverpool won today’s final.

So many of their first-team players were injured today. So many youngster had to come on and make a difference.
As captain of the football club, there was so much on Van Dijk’s shoulders against Chelsea. In just about every measure he could, Virgil stood up to that.
Putting the goal aside for a moment, Liverpool’s No.4 was truly colossal today. He has formed a brilliant partnership with Ibrahima Konate and that was on view for everyone to see at Wembley.
