‘Special’ Liverpool youngster could play part in the Carabao Cup final if Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah don’t make it

There’s less than 24 hours to go until Liverpool kick off their Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

These are set to be crucial hours as the Reds determine exactly who can feature for them at Wembley. Although a number of players are already ruled out, there is hope that both Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah can still make in back in time.

Should the two forwards be passed fit though, it seems impossible that either will start. As a result, impact subs are the best Liverpool fans can probably hope for.

In the disappointing event that Jurgen Klopp can not call upon two players who have scored 34 goals between them this season, he does still have options.

Cody Gakpo has been fantastic in this year’s Carabao Cup and will shoulder most of the goal-scoring burden. But if Gakpo and co aren’t firing, then Klopp can turn to his bench and find some unlikely fire power.

Without Nunez and Salah that will likely come in the shape of 18-year-old hitman Jayden Danns. Flying on the high of making his Liverpool debut on Wednesday, Danns could now be set for an important role in a Wembley cup final.

Danns ready for cup final role

Liverpool will obviously be much worse of without both Nunez and Salah tomorrow. However, Wednesday’s win over Luton should be instructive on how Klopp could plan without them.

Obviously, Chelsea are a different proposition to Luton and will pose problems that the Hatters didn’t for the Reds.

Nonetheless, if we assume Liverpool’s front three will be Gakpo, Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz, then it’s worth looking at those in reserve.

Midweek, Klopp left his forward trio on until the 89th minute of the match. Unable to turn to anyone else, that’s when the manager brought Danns on for his debut.

Looking at the others available to Jurgen, the only one of an attacking nature was Kaide Gordon. Although Gordon has much more first-team experience than Danns, he’s also still working his way back to fitness.

Fit and in the form of his life right now, Danns should be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Unless Nunez and Salah come back, Klopp will not have any more forwards to pick from on Sunday. Consequently, it’s safe to assume that right now, remarkably, Jayden is his fourth option.

That won’t faze Jurgen. The 56-year-old described Danns as being ‘special’ just a few weeks ago and he’s not afraid to chuck youngsters in if they show they’re ready.

Obviously, no one would have expected that the teenager’s second Liverpool appearance would come in a cup final. But football has a funny way of working out sometimes. If the Reds need something by way of a striker from the bench against Chelsea, then it’ll be Danns who’s turned to. Not ideal, no. But what a story that could be.
